Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE A Dance Company

Deep spirituality and an embrace of the rhythms of the African diaspora are hallmarks of Ronald K. Brown’s work. Founded by Brown in 1985, and based in Brooklyn, New York, EVIDENCE, A Dance Company uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of traditional African forms and rhythms. This program has a deep focus on Cuba: Why You Follow is a rousing ensemble piece exploring Afro-Cuban rhythms, while IFE/My Heart takes a look at the parallel journey of U.S., Cuban and West African traditions towards love. The two pieces are presented alongside the duet March.

Moderator: Ruth Rosenberg, Artist Engagement Coordinator, Mondavi Center, UC Davis

Mr. Brown's meshing of African and modern dance is like an electrical charge that first hits the shoulders and draws a line down to the feet amid swiveling hips and slicing arms.
